Student Journalism Institute                                 May 2018 – June 2018

​

Chosen among the country’s top student journalists for a three-week journalism camp in NYC. The program is in partnership with The CUNY School of Journalism and teaches students under the guidance of past and present NYT staff.

 

  • Pitched and worked on an enterprise piece on how the construction of a new soccer stadium is neglecting the needs of the residents of the Bronx who face one of the highest rates of homelessness in the nation.

  • Conducted research and interviewed residents of the Bronx as well as major corporations involved in the construction and funding of a professional soccer stadium.

  • Worked as part of a team to produce a newspaper which was made available in print, online and posted on all social media platforms.

  • Worked alongside producers in creating content and bringing forth ideas for a morning show called Good Things Utah.  

  • Edited and wrote scripts for the show hosts and made sure everything was correct in Rundown Creator.

  • Booked guests and confirmed their arrival, assisted in setting up any of their equipment or props.

  • Wrote stories and edited videos for the website as well as posting on various social media platforms.

  • Researched current news and use social media to find ideas for topics and pitched show ideas.

  • Was selected as a Society of Professional Journalists finalist for a breaking news story on a fire that was near campus that affected an entire community causing evacuations.

  • Developed feature-writing skills by interviewing a subject each week and writing an article about them.

  • Enhanced research skills by working on numerous enterprise and investigative stories.

  • Founding member of the first NABJ chapter at my school and the entire state.

  • Recruited students of color who have interest in journalism to be a part of NABJ.

  • Held bi-weekly meetings to discuss issues or concerns relating to members or NABJ in general.

  • Attended yearly professional conferences in various cities to network and get acquainted with schools, journalists, and news networks.

  • Assisted in the running of the organization by ensuring that membership records were accurate, meetings were held bi-weekly, and emails were sent to all members. 

  • Held recruiting events and networking parties on campus to encourage the growth and membership of SPJ.

  • Created an environment where students of color felt safe and welcome to communicate about issues affecting them on campus.

  • Planned monthly activities for members of BSU and other students on campus to engage in diversity and inclusion.

  • Held events with local police department to speak on interacting positively with communities of color

  • Held community events such as MLK march and breakfast, dinner honoring local jazz legend Joe McQueen, and many other events bringing members of the community together.
